US-Cuba row over insects goes to weapons meeting
Article Abstract:
A meeting of countries that signed the 1975 Biological Weapons Convention will hear allegations by Cuba that the US discharged Thrips palmi, an insect pest, over Cuba in 1996. The meeting was requested by Russia, but it will have no powers to investigate further or impose sanctions, and could only recommend that the United Nations Security Council seek an investigation. State Department aircraft for the eradication of narcotics crops had been authorized to fly across Cuban airspace to Colombia, and were said to have released an unidentified substance over an area which later had an outbreak of Thrips palmi. The State Department claims that only smoke was released to signal its presence.

Calls for cloning ban sell science short
Article Abstract:
Scientists contend that restrictions on human cloning experiments could stifle further developments in animal biotechnology and medicine. The warning was aired by the scientific community in response to the growing public clamor for an outright ban on human cloning. While acknowledging the need for ethical debate, many scientists claim that the public tends to focus unfairly on the hypothetical applications of human cloning and not on the immediate and realistic possibilities.
