US plan to scrap DNA panel splits genetic researchers
Article Abstract:
US genetic researchers are split over the plan to eliminate the Recombitant DNA Advisory Committee (RAC) of the National Institutes of Health and transfer its functions to Food and Drug Administration. Some scientists and politicians criticize the proposal for its lack of possibility of analysis of new protocols, and public scrutiny of the experimental applications of the gene-therapy research. Others support it on the basis that gene therapy research is no longer a new field, and the committee thus loses its usefulness.

Gene panel reprieved after public outcry...
Article Abstract:
The U.S. National Institutes of Health's Recombinant DNA Advisory Committee (RAC), which provides a public forum for debating issues regarding gene therapy, has been modified as a result of public opinion. This modification will enable expansion of public discussion on gene therapy and maintenance of public database. Further changes are expected to replace the RAC with a smaller committee dealing only with convening gene-therapy policy conferences.

Genome study maps chemical sensitivity
Article Abstract:
The strategy for a study of genes that affect susceptibility to chemicals has been presented at a conference organized by the US National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences (NIEHS). The Environmental Genome Project (EGP) will look at the DNA of around 1,000 individuals, and will attempt to document the occurrences of selected polymorphisms. The study will take place over six years and will cost $60 million.
