US research safety system 'in jeopardy'

The US Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) says in a report that the effectiveness of institutional review boards (IRBs) is being jeopardized by increased workloads. The report says that the IRBs, initiated in 1963, are incapable of fulfilling their proper functions because changes to the structure of research have created too much work. the IRB's oversee the ethics of government-funded experiments that involve human subjects.

The quality and effectiveness of the boards that oversee the research on human subjects in the U.S. are discussed. The institutional review boards (IRBS) should improve the monitoring of the ongoing clinical trials in order to prevent the mishaps.
