US warms to carbon sequestration research
Article Abstract:
The US Dept of Energy is allowing $9 million for three years to two research centres investigating the potential role of the sequestration of atmospheric carbon dioxide in oceanic or terrestrial ecosystems in reducing global warming. Scientists from a number of disciplines will study approaches to the separation, capture and sequestration of the carbon dioxide given off by fossil fuel. This research is being undertaken at a time when it is increasingly widely recognized that there is a need to reduce emissions of greenhouse gases. However, there are still mixed opinions about the best way to do this.

Kansas kicks evolution out of the classroom
Article Abstract:
There is a call of US scientists to become more involved in discussions over the teaching of evolution, after the Kansas Board of Education decided to halt the study of evolutionary biology in public schools. Local school districts will use the standards set by the board eliminating the required teaching of evolution and cosmology, to set their curriculums. The presidents of some public universities in Kansas claim the changed standards will damage the future of science education.
