Unequal competition between three-spined stickleback, Gasterosteus aculeatus, L., encountering sequential prey
Article Abstract:
The fastest swimming and most reactive fish acquires competitive advantage over slow moving and less reactive fish, when encountering small single prey. A fast reacting fish, having a large jaw width, has a fair chance to meet its daily energy requirement irrespective of the frequency of encounters with any size of the prey. The probability of eating a prey depends upon the phenotypic characteristics of the individual fish. The competitive ability of the fish is related to the capacity to reach the prey first, encounter rate and the capacity of jaw apparatus to ingest the prey.

Development of behavioral differences between individuals and populations of sticklebacks, Gasterosteus aculeatus
Article Abstract:
The development stability of single behaviors and correlations between these behaviors are examined in two Californian populations of three-spined sticklebacks. The result suggests that behavioral syndromes do not necessarily limit behavioral plasticity and suggest that ecological and developmental circumstances might favor different suites of traits.
