Using age structure to detect impacts on threatened populations: a case study with Steller sea lions
Article Abstract:
Research on Stellar sea lions along the North Pacific Rim indicates that age structure is a key component for evaluating demographic changes in populations. Time-varying matrix models were used to analyze population declines, with low juvenile survivorship accounting for population declines during the early 1980s, and low fecundity accounting for declines during the 1990s.

Demography of two Mexican Spotted Owl populations
Article Abstract:
Research presented concerns the population status of the Mexican Spotted Owl (Strix occidentalis lucida) in northern Mexico and southwestern US. Topics discussed include estimated annual survival and fecundity rates, and possible explanations for the owls' population decline over the years 1991-1997, such as habitat degradation.

Factors Related to Fecal Corticosterone Levels in California Spotted Owls: Implications for Assessing Chronic Stress
Article Abstract:
Research on Spotted owl populations demonstrates the importance of identifying other factors that may influence fecal corticosterone levels is experiments that use corticosterone levels to assess stress. These may include diet, partial sampling, and sample handling.
