Venom metering by juvenile prairie rattlesnakes, Crotalus v. viridis: effects of prey size and experience
Article Abstract:
Rattlesnakes appear to learn from experience that larger doses of venom are needed to immobilize larger prey than smaller prey. A study of rattlesnake venom release when biting mice was conducted, using young snakes. Snakes that had never bitten anything before initially injected the same amount of venom into mice of all sizes. The same snakes controlled the venom release the second time through the experiment, injecting higher doses into larger mice.

Strike-induced chemosensory searching and trailing behaviour in neonatal rattlesnakes
Article Abstract:
The ontogeny of predatory behavior in neonatal rattlesnakes was studied. Laboratory-born snakes recognized and attacked freshly killed juvenile mice although they do not usually take rodent prey in their first year. The neonatal rattlesnakes also exhibited chemosensory searching and trailing behavior which were initially jerky and erratic. The movements became methodical and precise after several feedings.

Learning in host selection in Helicoverpa armigera (Hubner)(Lepidoptera: Noctuidae)
Article Abstract:
The effect of experience on alighting host selection in adult female Helicoverpa armigera was investigated in a large greenhouse and in an indoor flight cage wherein the moths had experienced tomato or tobacco plants, or were given no experience. Observations revealed that experience affected both pre- and post-alighting host selection. This result indicated the first evidence of learning in moths.
