White magic
Article Abstract:
Population estimates of the rare white Kermode bear, Ursus americanus kermodei, range from 30 to 40 animals. The Kermode, found only on British Columbia's Princess Royal Island and the adjacent mainland, is now known to be a white phase of the American black bear. The Valhalla Wilderness Society is urging the provincial government to establish a 655,000-acre preserve for the bear, whose rare color attracts poachers and whose habitat is threatened by logging. A bear-watching trip to the island is described. Aspects of the Kermode's biology and behavior are discussed.
