Why cars in the next lane seem to go faster
Article Abstract:
Drivers often fall victim to the illusion that the traffic in the next lane on a congested road seems to be moving faster than traffic in the lane in which they are currently situated, even when both lanes actually have the same average speed. This illusion arises because vehicles spread out when moving quickly and come more closely together when moving slowly. It is possible for a driver to overtake many vehicles in a short time interval when the traffic is moving slowly, but it takes much longer for the driver to be overtaken by the same vehicles.

Attentional requirements in a 'preattentive' feature search task
Article Abstract:
Research suggests that attention may be vital to allow the visual system to identify preattentive features. Preattentive features are generally believed to be elementary and as such demand no attentional resources for perception. Evidence suggests the imposition of an attentionally demanding visual presentation task adversely affects the identification of differences in a simple feature, showing that there is a limited capacity for perceiving preattentive features.

fMRI evidence for objects as the units of attentional selection
Article Abstract:
Functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) was used to test predictions of the object-based theory that pre-attentive mechanisms section the visual array into objects, groups or surfaces, which act as visual attentional targets. Attending to one attribute of an object was found to enhance the neural representation of the attributed, and also of the other attribute of the same object.
