A colorimetric technique for detecting trichothecenes and assessing relative potencies
Article Abstract:
A new colorimetric bioassay which is based on inhibition of beta-galactosidase activity in the yeast Kluyveromyces marxianus was tested for sensitivity to a range of mycotoxins. Fourteen mycotoxins known as natural contaminants of foods or feeds or earlier reported to be toxic to K marxianus were tested. Results revealed that the colorimetric toxicity test is highly sensitive to several trichothecenes and showed essentially similar results, but higher sensitivity than, other yeast and animal tissue culture bioassays. The test also demonstrated simplicity, speed, ease of replication and quantification of results.

Applications of a colorimetric plate assay for soluble methane monooxygenase activity
Article Abstract:
A colorimetric procedure to screen bacteria grown on solid media for soluble methane monooxygenase (sMMO) activity was described. The assay method was based on the conversion by methanotrophs of naphthalene to naphthol and on o-dianisidine which turns purple in the presence of naphthol. The method was effective in the enumeration of Methylosinus trichosporium OB3b in sand samples and in the isolation of type II methanotrophs from landfill soils.

Molecular diversity of methanogens in feedlot cattle from Ontario and Prince Edward Island, Canada
Article Abstract:
16S rRNA gene libraries were used for examining the molecular diversity of rumen methanogens in feedlot cattle and the composition of the methanogen populations from Ontario and Prince Edward Island. Findings reveal the identification of nine possible new species from the two clone libraries.
