Inteins in mycobacterial GyrA are a taxonomic character
Article Abstract:
The A subunit of DNA gyrase in mycobacteria is usually exposed to splicing events as its gene, gyrA, has an insertion encoding an intein. Studies on several kinds of isolates of Mycobacterium kansasii, Mycobacterium malmoense, Mycobacterium marinum, Mycobacterium ulcerans and Mycobacterium xenopi showed that the presence of GyrA inteins is not by chance but a taxonomic character specific for a given taxon at a species or subspecies level.

VlpA of vibrio cholerae 01: the first bacterial member of the alpha2-microglobulin lipocalin superfamily
Article Abstract:
Specific labelling, haemagglutination and porphyrin assays on cloned Vibrio cholerae 01 genes were employed to identify the first bacterial member of the alpha2-microglobulin lipocalin, VlpA genes. Results have shown that VlpA is an outer-membrane protein exhibiting a lipoprotein characteristic. Furthermore, the activity of VlpA as a haemin-building protein indicated a possible involvement in iron uptake.
