Mate protection and winter pair-bonds in Black-capped Chickadees
Article Abstract:
The mate protection and winter pair-bonds in Black-capped Chikadess were studied to confirm the findings on related studies on wintering chickadees. Results identify three benefits for female for female paired to alpha males. These include females' subjection to less intense aggression from mates compared to dominants and subordinates, less frequent aggression when accompanied by mates and maintenance of a higher feeding rate in the presence of dominant flock members.

Impact of tent caterpillar defoliation on the reproductive success of black-capped chickadees
Article Abstract:
Forest tent caterpillar outbreaks do not significantly affect the breeding successes of Black-capped Chickadees despite large scale defoliation. It does not lead to a significant rise in the food supply of chickadees due to the un-palatableness of the larvae. Some pairs have experienced decreased reproductive success in the form of complete or partial loss of the brood to starvation during the brood-rearing period at a time when defoliation was at its peak.
