Analysis of mitochondrial DNA indicates that domestic sheep are derived from two different ancestral maternal sources: No evidence for contributions from Urial and Argali sheep
Article Abstract:
The origin of Ovis aries, the modern domestic sheep, is still uncertain. Mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) from European, African and Asian sheep breeds was assayed for restriction fragment length polymorphisms (RFLP) to investigate the origins and phylogenetic relationships of domestic sheep. Two major domestic sheep lineages were apparent in the branches containing mouflon and domestic sheep. Asian and European domestic sheep lineages were found to differ by 4.43%, with the mouflon sequence diverging by 4.52% from the Asian type, but just 1.36% from the European type. This suggests that some modern domestic sheep and European mouflon have a common ancestor.

RFLP linkage map of an alfalfa meiotic mutant based on an F(sub 1) population
Article Abstract:
The noninbred F(sub 1) mapping populations are useful in removing the effects of inbreeding depression on segregation distortion to get genetic linkage maps in diploid alfalfa. A pseudo-testcross strategy helps in generating RFLP linkage maps of diploid alfalfa genotypes, a genotype of cultivated alfalfa, and a mutant. A comparison with earlier data gives small differences, due to the detection of multiple RFLP loci by DNA probes suggesting the presence of unlinked duplicated areas in the alfalfa genome.

Discordant inheritance of mitochondrial and plastid DNA in diverse alfalfa genotypes
Article Abstract:
A study was done on the discordant inheritance of mitochondrial and plastid DNA in alfalfa genotypes. Two cytoplasmic male sterile maternal plants and 25 paternal plants were crossed to analyze mtDNA inheritance in 33 F1. A comparison of polymorphisms among parents and progenies showed maternal restriction among all progenies which suggests that the paternal inheritance of mtDNA is rare. A mixed inheritance pattern was observed in the chloroplast DNA.
