Study of genetic diversity of eukaryotic picoplankton in different oceanic regions by small-subunit rRNA gene cloning and sequencing
Article Abstract:
Researchers analyzing the diversity of marine picoeukaryotes found 126 clones affiliated with algal classes, 27 clones affilated with heterotrophic organisms 53 clones of novel stramenopiles and 19 clones of novel alveolates. Picoeukaryotes are the most abundant eukaryotes on Earth.

Application of denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis (DGGE) to study the diversity of marine picoeukaryotic assemblages and comparison of DGGE with other molecular techniques
Article Abstract:
Researchers detected prasinophytes, prymnesiophytes, stramenopiles, cryptophytes, dinophytes, and pelagophytes in marine samples taken from different depths of the Mediterranean Sea. These are all marine picoeukaryotes, which are found throughout the world's oceans.

Comparison of different denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis primer sets for the study of marine bacterioplankton communities
Article Abstract:
An annual seasonal cycle of composition of a bacterioplankton community in an oligotrophic coastal system is studied by denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis (DGGE) using five different primer sets. Results show that the primer set 357fGC-907rM grouped samples according to seasons and could be most suitable for the routine use of PCR-denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis analysis.
