BIRinging chromosomes through cell division--and survivin' the experience
Article Abstract:
This review discusses the mechanistic aspects of BIR proteins that exhibit zinc binding fold called the BIR domain in the regulation of chromosome segregation and cytokinesis. Research reveals that these BIR domain proteins also function as apoptosis suppressors and are called survivins.

The deaf jerker mouse has a mutation in the gene encoding the espin actin-bundling proteins of hair cell stereocilia and lacks espins
Article Abstract:
Research demonstrates that the espin gene encoded actin-bundling espins are related to the jerker mutation which is involved in the hair cell loss and deafness in mice. Data further indicate that the espin gene maps to the region of mouse chromosome 4 as jerker.

Drosophila Tsc1 functions with Tsc2 to antagonize insulin signaling in regulating cell growth,, cell proliferation, and organ size
Article Abstract:
Results demonstrate that co-expression of Tsc1 and Tsc2 mutant genes in Drosophila reduces cell number and decreases cell and organ size. Genetic epistasis data suggest that both the genes are involved in the insulin signaling pathway.
