Cell hydrophobicity and sulfur adhesion of Thiobacillus thiooxidans
Article Abstract:
The hydrophilic interaction between Thiobacillus thiooxidans cells and elemental sulfur was analyzed under varied potassium phosphate concentrations during the oxidation of sulfur. Analysis of hydrophobicity in Thiobacillus thiooxidans cells cultured on Starkey's medium indicated the role of high potassium phosphate levels in increasing cell surface hydrophobicity and reducing cell adhesion to sulfur. Furthermore, phosphate and hydrogen-ion concentration also altered the oxidation of elemental sulfur by Thiobacillus thiooxidans.

Oxidation of elemental sulfur to sulfite by Thiobacillus thiooxidans cells
Article Abstract:
An investigation was conducted to determine the direct oxidation product of elemental sulfur in Thiobacillus thiooxidans. Cells were grown on Starkey's medium supplemented with sulfur powder, and the oxidation product was determined by pararosaniline method. The results showed that T. thiooxidans oxidizes elemental sulfur to sulfite. The molar ratios of the reaction are 1:1:1, corresponding to elemental sulfur, molecular oxygen and water. The results confirm the central role of sulfite in inorganic sulfur metabolism.

Effect of various ions, pH, and osmotic pressure on oxidation of elemental sulfur by Thiobacillus thiooxidans
Article Abstract:
Research is conducted on the effect of anions and cations on the sulfur oxidation by Thiobacillus thiooxidans at different levels of hydrogen-ion concentration. Results demonstrate the acidophilic bacterium response to colloid charge neutralization by ions and to osmotic pressure.
