Cell-surface calreticulin initiates clearance of viable or apopotic cells through trans-activation of LRP on the phagocyte
Article Abstract:
Calreticulum acts as a second general recognition ligand by binding and activating LDL-receptor-related protein (LRP) on the engulfing cell. Disruption of interactions between CD47 (integrin-associated protein) on the target cell and SIRPalpha (SHPS-1), a heavily glycosylated transmembrane protein on the engulfing cell, permitted uptake of viable cells in a calreticulin/LRP-dependent manner.

Dynamic helix interactions in transmembrane signaling
Article Abstract:
The circumstances that have led to studying dynamic helix interactions in protein transmembrane domains signaling are discussed. The diversity of transmembrane proteins has suggested that some of the most interesting properties of transmembrane helix interactions might be the least amenable to study by existing techniques.

Chemicals call bacteria, and a new membrane protein machine answers
Article Abstract:
The discovery of the processes controlled by the roughly one-third of genes with no known function is a major challenge in biology. A study shows that a new type of chemical genetics revealed the function of a new outer membrane protein complex in bacteria.
