Distribution and diversity of symbiotic thermophiles, Symbiobacterium thermophilum and related bacteria, in natural environments
Article Abstract:
Research has been conducted on the Symbiobacterium species. The distribution and diversity of Symbiobacterium thermophilum according to the detection of the tryptophanase activity in the thermophilic cultures have been investigated and the results are reported.

Cloning, nucleotide sequences, and overexpression in Escherichia coli of tandem copies of a tryptophanase gene in an obligately symbiotic thermophile, Symbiobacterium thermophilum
Article Abstract:
Two genes coding for tryptophanase enzymes, Tna1 and Tna2, in Symbiobacterium thermophilum were sequenced and their products expressed and analyzed. The nucleotide and amino acid sequences are highly homologous, showing that Tna1 and Tna2 share 92% of their 453 amino acids. Further analysis showed that only Tna2 is produced, and the tna1 gene silent. The enzymes' characteristics show marked differences in activation energy for catalysis and thermostability, despite the high degree of similarity.

Identification of indole derivatives as self-growth inhibitors of symbiobacterium thermophilum, a unique bacterium whose growth depends on coculture with a Bacillus sp.
Article Abstract:
Isolating and purifying the active principle from the culture supernatant was used to decide chemical structure of putative self-growth inhibitor produced by symbiobacterium thermophilum. Results conclude that Bacillus proves beneficiary for symbiobacterium thermophilum because it detoxify BII and BIE in the coculture.
