Complex function and expression of delta during Drosophila oogenesis
Article Abstract:
The expression of Delta (Dl) protein in germ-line and follicle cells during the oogenesis of Drosophila melanogaster was discussed. The expression was correlated with different morphogenetic defects such as germ-line cell necrosis, multiphasic embryonic arrest of fertilized eggs and failure of stalk formation within the germarium. In addition, the mutation that caused context-dependent defects in Dl function was identified. The Dl protein showed similar spatial and temporal expression patterns when compared with the Notch protein. However, these patterns did not coincide in different stages of oogeneis which suggested that the actions are related to specification of cell fates during oogenesis

Identification of target genes regulated by homeotic proteins in Drosophila melanogaster through genetic selection of Ultrabithorax protein-binding sites in yeast
Article Abstract:
Identification of target genes controlled by the Ultrabithorax (UBX) homeoproteins in Drosophila melanogaster involves the use of a novel method based on the transcriptional activation of a selectable reporter in yeast cells. Screening of 15% of the Drosophila genome enables the recovery of various DNA fragments associated with the activation by UBX isoform Ia. Many fragments are single-copy sequences, which reside close to a transcription unit. Transcriptional regulators in diverse organisms can be studied by slightly modifying the approach.
