Unusual variability of the Drosophila melanogaster ref(2)P protein which controls the multiplication of sigma rhabdovirus
Article Abstract:
An allele, P(sub n), restrictive for sigma rhabdovirus multiplication at Drosophila melanogaster ref(2)P locus was identified. Analysis showed that the allele manifested a weaker antiviral activity and different molecular structure from P(sub p). In addition, S1 nuclease analysis classified five types of alleles based on their molecular structure where three were found permissive and two restrictive. Nucleotide sequence comparison with D. erecta ref(2)P gene revealed that the high variability of the ref(2)p locus was a result of an effort to maintain the existence of a functional protein.

Evidence for intrinsic differences in the formation of chromatin domains in Drosophila melanogaster
Article Abstract:
Findings of a study on intrinsic differences in heterochromatic domain formation are analyzed. The study employed two variant position effect variegation mutants in Drosophila melanogaster to examine the compaction of DNA stretching in heterochromatin. Results show that the compaction events are independent of each other and conditioned by different components. These events are influenced by variegation enhancer effects on gene compaction.
