Composition and dynamics of bacterial communities of a drinking water supply system as assessed by RNA- and DNA-based 16S rRNA gene fingerprinting
Article Abstract:
Bacterial community dynamics of a whole drinking water supply system (DWSS) were studied from source to tap for which raw water was provided by two reservoirs with different water characteristics in the Harz Mountains of Northern Germany. It showed significant differences in the detection of the major taxonomic groups between DNA-based and RNA-based fingerprints irrespective of the reservoir and chlorination of the drinking water seemed to promote growth of nitrifying bacteria.

Influence of ecosystematic factors on survival of Escherichia coli after large-scale release into lake water mesocosms
Article Abstract:
Mesocosm studies using an Escherichia coli K-12 strain were performed in a eutrophic lake to understand the survival and fate of the released microorganisms. E. coli showed a strong reduction after release into lake mesocosms. However, particles seemed to function as niches for survival and addition of culture medium supported their long-term survival. On the other hand, plate counts decreased strongly in microcosms with sterile lake water which was particle-free.

Genotyping of heterotrophic bacteria from the central Baltic Sea by use of low-molecular-weight RNA profiles
Article Abstract:
High-resolution electrophoresis of low-molecular-weight (LMW) RNA profiling is useful for taxonomic genotyping of heterotrophic bacteria from natural environments. The 123 strains of bacteria present in the Baltic Sea have been classified into 24 genotypes using this method. Most of the strains in the Baltic Sea belong to the Vibrionaceae, Enterobacteriaceae and Pseudomonadaceae families. The most widely occurring species is Shewanella putrefaciens.
