Decolorization and detoxification of extraction-stage effluent from chlorine bleaching of kraft pulp by Rhizopus oryzae
Article Abstract:
The decolorization and dechlorination of bleach plant effluents by Rhizopus oryzae has been studied. R. oryzae is a zygomycete which is better at decolorizing, dechlorinating and detoxifying bleach plant effluents than other basidiomycetes. It removed 92% to 95% of the color, 50% of the chemical oxygen demand, 72% of the adsorbable organic halide amd 37% of the extractable organic halide in 24 hours at temperatures between 25 to 45 degrees C and at pH values of 3 to 5.

Assessment of indoor climate in an apartment by use of a fungal index
Article Abstract:
A study was conducted on the assessment of indoor climate by use of a fungal index. The index represents the capacity of individual room environments to allow fungal growth and also predicts fungal growth. A correlation was observed between the fungal index and fungal contamination, therefore confirming the effectivity of the fungal index in detecting and comparing microclimates in various areas of a residence.

Characterization of fungal biofilms within a municipal water distribution system
Article Abstract:
Researchers confirm that fungi are present in municipal water systems. Most of the fungi in the Springfield, Missouri water supply were present as spores, but more research is needed to determine if these spores can germinate in the water system.
