Degradation of a sodium acrylate oligomer by an Arthrobacter sp
Article Abstract:
The characteristics of microbial degradation of the sodium acrylate oligomer by Arthrobacter sp. strain NO-18 isolated from soil were reported. The structure of the terminal group has little effect on degradation, but the main chain structure affects biodegradation by this strain. It grew on acrylic acid, propionic acid, glutaric acid, 2-methylglutaric acid and 1,3,5-pentanetricarboxylic acid. The results suggested that the acrylic unit was susceptible to attack by this strain.

Degradation of 1,4-dichlorobenzene by Xanthobacter flavus 14p1
Article Abstract:
Xanthobacter flavus 14P1 cells can utilize 1,4-dichlorobenzene (1,4-DCB) as carbon source by degrading it by a dioxygenase through the modified 'ortho' pathway. The bacterium grows on 1,4-DCB and release chloride ions. GC-MS analyses reveal that the initial products of degradation are 3,6-dichlorocatechol and 3,6-dichloro-cis-1,2-dihydroxycyclohexa-3,5-diene. Cells grown on 1,4-DCB also exhibit dehydrogenase activities.

Biodegradability and mechanical prooperties of poly-(beta-hydroxybutyrate-Co-beta-hydroxyvalerate)-starch blends
Article Abstract:
The mechanical properties and biodegrability of the blending of wheat and starch is discussed. Starch content was steadily increased. Although tensile strength and flexibility decreased, the overalll mechanical properties of the polymer was maintained. Starch containing samples degraded faster than polymer containing microbial cultures. Aerobic degradation was more rapid than anaerobic degradation.
