Candida albicans proteinases: resolving the mystery of a gene family
Article Abstract:
This review elucidates expression and regulation of the virulence factors in Candida albicans, particularly the aspartic proteinases belonging to the SAP family. Data show that the Sap isoenzymes mediate a variety of functions in vivo with individual proteinases expressing at different times and stages of the infection process.

Differential regulation of SAP8 and SAP9, which encode two new members of the secreted aspartic proteinase family in Candida albicans
Article Abstract:
Candida albicans is an opportunistic pathogen secreting aspartic proteinases (Saps). There are seven identified genes encoding Saps (SAP1-7), but there is evidence to suggested there are further SAP genes. Two new genes, SAP8 and SAP9 have been isolated following screening of a C. albicans LambdaEMBL3 genomic library. SAP8 mRNA was preferentially expressed in yeasts and SAP9 was found to encode an aspartic proteinase.
