Direct determination of carbon and nitrogen contents of natural bacterial assemblages in marine environments
Article Abstract:
A novel method for the determination of the carbon and nitrogen contents of natural bacterial assemblages in coastal and oceanic environments is presented. Tangential flow filtration was employed to concentrate natural bacterial populations separated from detritus and phytoplankton. Results suggest that bacteria contribute significantly to total biomass in marine environments. Findings also indicate that large errors may occur in the assessment of the role of bacteria in biogeochemical cycles and food webs if a single conversion factor for diverse marine environments is used.

Glutamate biosynthesis in Lactococcus lactis subsp. lactis NCDO 2118
Article Abstract:
The role of enzymes and carbon flux in the ability of Lactococcus lactis to grow in a medium lacking glutamate was examined. Although similar growth rates were observed in media lacking in glutamic acid and those with glutamine, the replacement of glutamic acid led to a reduced growth rate and prolonged lag phase. Enzymatic study revealed that the link between glycolysis and the amphibolic tricarboxylic acid cycle was supplied by a carboxylase activity.

Transient growth requirement in Bacillus subtilis following the cessation of exponential growth
Article Abstract:
Bacillus subtilis requires glutamic acid and isoleucine when it enters a stationary phase following a period of exponential growth. Normally, these two amino acids are not essential.
