Glutathione S-transferase-encoding gene as a potential probe for environmental bacterial isolates capable of degrading polycylic aromatic hydrocarbons
Article Abstract:
Polymerase chain reaction primers isolated from the glutathione S-transferase (GST)-encoding gene of Sphingomonas paucimobilis EPA505 were used in identifying homologs of the GST-encoding gene from samples obtained from New Zealand, Antarctica and the US. The primers amplified the GST from the Sphingomonas strains and were also used to amplify GST from soil DNA. GSTs are genes of detoxifying enzymes that can degrade a wide range of xenobiotic compounds including polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons.

Precipitation of arsenic trisulfide by Desulfotomaculum auripigmentum
Article Abstract:
The As(V)-reducing bacterium, Desulfotomaculum auripigmentum, intra- and extracellularly precipitates As2S3 during the respiration of As(V) to As(III). The precipitation of As2S3 by Desulfotomaculum auripigmentum was dependent on the rate of As(V) reduction. The precipitation of As2S3 was also part of a detoxification mechanism for the removal of As(III) which accumulates in the medium before the formation of As2S3.
