Direct observation of microbial inhibition of calcite dissolution
Article Abstract:
Vertical scanning interferometry (VSI) provides a method for quantification of surface topography at the angstrom to nanometer level, and can be used directly and nondestructively to measure mineral dissolution rates with high precision. VSI has been used to compare the abiotic dissolution behavior of a representative calcite (CaCo3) cleavage face with that observed upon addition of an environmental microbe, Shewanella oneidensis MR-1, to the crystal surface.

Detection of molecular diversity in bacillus atrophaeus by amplified fragment length polymorphism analysis
Article Abstract:
A study was conducted to examine strains within the American type culture collection originally deposited as bacillus globigii, B. subtilis var. niger, or bacillius niger using 16S rRNA gene sequencing and amplified fragment length polymorphism (AFLP) analysis to determine the level of molecular diversity among these strains and their relationship with closely related taxa.

Short duration low direct current electrical field treatment is a practical tool for considerably reducing counts of gram negative bacteria entrapped in gel beads
Article Abstract:
Gels are a combination of a liquid and polymer molecules to hold the liquid in place, these are used in foods, contact lenses and beauty products. An application of a direct current electrical field to reduce microbial distribution in gel beads is made for short durations to examine the viability of gram negative bacteria caught in these beads.
