Dorsal-ventral patterning genes restrict NK-2 homeobox gene expression to the ventral half of the central nervous system in Drosophila embryos
Article Abstract:
The expression of the NK-2 homeobox gene in the Drosophila embryo is regulated by the expression of genes which determine the ventral-dorsal and anterior-posterior axis of the embryo. During the blastoderm stage, NK-2 is stimulated in the ventral region by the dorsal protein and in the posterior region by the twist gene independently or along with the dorsal protein. The determination of the boundaries of the neuroectodermal cells expressing NK-2 is independent. The mesodermal lateral neuroectodermal and dorsal epidermal anlage and the mesectodermal cells do not express the NK-2 gene.

Regulation of the Hoxb-8 gene: synergism between multimerized cis-acting elements increases responsiveness to positional information
Article Abstract:
The amino acid sequences present upstream in the Hoxb-8 gene contain cis-acting elements which interact with the promoter of Hoxb-8 to determine the regional development of embryonic cells. The interaction of 11 kb sequences upstream of Hoxb-8 with the lacZ reporter gene shifts the edge of the rostral margin expression posteriorly. The cis-acting elements which individually cause the Hox-like expression interact to shift the margins upwards. The activity of the elements determining the rostral margins is more in the posterior precursors than in the anterior precursors.

Molecular heterogeneity among primary motoneurons and within myotomes revealed by the differential mRNA expression of novel Islet-1 homologs in embryonic zebrafish
Article Abstract:
Two zebrafish Islet-1(Ist-1) family genes, zfIs1-2 and zfIs1-3, are heterogeneous in the primary motoneurons before differentiation and are involved in their differentiation. After differentiation, zfIs1-2 mRNA appears in ventral midsegmental cells, which are caudal primary motononeurons, after about 15-hrs. ZfIsl-3 mRNA is expressed at 17 hrs in ventral myotomes and may be a target for caudal primary motoneurons.
