Spatial changes in the bacterial community structure along a vertical oxygen gradient in flooded paddy soil cores
Article Abstract:
Results demonstrate that the bacterial stratification is directly related to the oxygen gradient in the soil layer. Molecular data suggest that metabolically active populations exist within the oxic and anoxic soils.

Novel bacterial lineages at the (sub)division level as detected by signature nucleotide-targeted recovery of 16S rRNA genes from bulk soil and rice roots of flooded rice microcosms
Article Abstract:
Researchers used PCR and terminal restriction fragment length polymorphism analysis to identify members of the Planctomycetales in soil and roots of rice paddies. They detected diversity at the subdivision level that had not previously been detected using 16S rDNA PCR.

Diversity and structure of the methanogenic community in anoxic rice paddy soil microcosms as examined by cultivation and direct 16S rRNA gene sequence retrieval
Article Abstract:
Methanosaeta spp. and Methanobacterium spp. are the dominant methanogenic groups in anoxic rice paddy soil, while Methanosacrina spp. are apparently less abundant. This was concluded in a study of the diversity and structure of the methanogenic community inhabiting the anoxic soil of flooded rice microcosms, using cultivation and molecular retrieval of partial archaeal 16S rRNA genes. Four groups of methanogens were identified in the molecular approach, while the cultivation approach revealed a population size of up to 10(super 7) per g of dry soil for the H2-CO2-utilizing methanogens and up to 10(super 6) for the acetate-utilizing methanogens.
