Enhanced production of pediocin PA-1 and coproduction of nisin and pediocin PA-1 by Lactococcus lactis
Article Abstract:
Enhancement of production of biopreservatives for food is discussed. Pediocin PA-1, a wide-spectrum bactericin from some Pediococcus acidilactici strains of meat origin and Lactobacillus plantarum and coproduction of nisin and pediocin PA-1 by Lactococcus lactis are of interest. A study into extending and improving production levels of heterologously expressed peptides using the lactococcin A secretion mechanism has been carried out. Genes from the lactococcin A-producing strain L. lactis WM4 were put into the pediocin PA-1-producing L. lactis IL1403 derivative.

A lactococcal expression system for engineered nisins
Article Abstract:
The Lactococcus lactis nisA gene is responsible for the biosynthesis of inactive prenisin, which is subsequently modified to produce mature nisin. L. lactis strain FI5876 was modified and developed for use as an expression system for genetically engineered nisin variants. The expression system contained an inactivated nisA gene, although the genes neccessary for prenisin maturation, secretion and immunity were expressed. This system allows for the expression of genetically-altered nisA gene products.

Nisin-controlled production of pediocin PA-1 and colicin V in nisin- and non-nisin-producing Lactococcus lactis strains
Article Abstract:
The production of pediocin PA-1 in Lactococcus lactis was enhanced by placing the chimeric structural gene under the control of the nisin-inducible nisA promoter (P(sub nisA)). Similar strategy was used to achieve production of the Escherichia coli bacteriocin colicin V in L. lactis.
