Establishment of a polychlorinated biphenyl-degrading enrichment culture with predominantly meta dechlorination
Article Abstract:
Conditions for the establishment of polychlorinated biphenyl (PCB)-degrading enrichment cultures were determined. The procedure involved the use of pyruvate, vitamins and reductants in concentrations favorable for aryl dechlorination. Characterization of the enrichment culture showed that the organisms dechlorinated PCB primarily at the meta position, and consist mostly of methanogenic bacteria. The culture is sediment-dependent and is stabley transferable.

Bacterial metabolism of chlorinated dehydroabietic acids occurring in pulp and paper mill effluents
Article Abstract:
Chlorinated dehydroabietic acids (DhA) result when wood pulp are bleached with chlorine. These compounds are then passed out as pulp and paper mill effluents but are very harmful to fishes. Twelve types of bacteria have been identified that could biologically degrade chlorinated DhAs. The twelve strains belong to the Proteobacteria, Sphingomonas and the Ralstonia classes.

Effects of low temperature and freeze-thaw cycles on hydrocarbon biodegradation in Arctic tundra soil
Article Abstract:
Researchers show that freeze-thaw cycles such as the ones that occur in Arctic soil can actually stimulate petroleum hydrocarbon degradation by indigenous microorganisms. However, no petroleum hydrocarbon degradation occurred at -5 degrees C.
