Evidence for distinct L-methionine catabolic pathways in the yeast Geotrichum candidum and the bacterium Brevibacterium linens
Article Abstract:
The tracing experiments were carried out to identify volatile and nonvolatile L-methionine degradation intermediates and end products in the yeast Geotrichum candidum and in the bacterium Brevibacterium linens. The results showed that L-methionine catabolism was initiated by an aminotransferase in Geotrichum candidum and the transmination product 4-methylthio-2-oxobutyric acid was subsequently degraded to methanethiol and alpha-KB.

Gene expression and biochemical analysis of cheese-ripening yeasts: focus on catabolism of L-methionine, lactate, and lactose
Article Abstract:
DNA microarrays from the yeasts Debaryomyces hansenii, Kluyveromyces marxianus and Yarrowia lipolytica are developed for determining which genes are expressed in a medium mimicking, a cheese-ripening environment. The studies show that multispecies microarray can be used as a powerful tool to examine targeted metabolism and possible metabolic interactions between species within microbial cocultures.

Involvement of a branched-chain aminotransferase in production of volatile sulfur compounds in Yarrowia lipolytica
Article Abstract:
Yarrowia lipolytica strains for production of volatile sulfur compounds (VSCs), L-methionine degrading and aminotransferase activity were investigated. It was observed that L-methionine degradation via transamination is involved in the formation of VSCs in Yarrowia lipolytica.
