Fanconi anemia (cross)linked to DNA repair
Article Abstract:
Fanconi anemia (FANC) is characterized by hypersensitivity to DNA interstrand crosslinks (ICLs) and susceptibility to tumor formation. Although, numerous FANC genes are identified, the mechanism by which proteins encoded by these genes protect a cell from DNA interstrand crosslinks remains unclear and hence the discovery of two DNA helicases that, when defective, cause FANC tips the balance in favor of the direct involvement of the FANC proteins in DNA repair and the bypass of DNA lesions.

Intracellular protein and DNA dynamics in competent Bacillus subtilis cells
Article Abstract:
Two DNA repair/recombination proteins are found to localize differentially to the cell poles in competent Bacillus subtilis cells. Data also showed that in competent bacteria there exists a specifically positioned and dynamic ssDNA binding apparatus that accepts ssDNA taken up through the polar competence machinery.

Role of the sigma factor in transcription initiation in the absence of core RNA polymerase
Article Abstract:
A study shows that a Bacillus subtilis [sigma] mutant is capable of specific binding and melting of promoter DNA in the absence of core RNA polymerase (RNAP). These results improve the overall understanding of a [sigma] function and change the model for RNAP programs [sigma] to recognize promoters.
