Quorum sensing in the dimorphic fungus Candida albicans is mediated by farnesol
Article Abstract:
Farnesol appears to be capable of preventing mycelial development in Candida albicans. Thus, it is involved in the inoculum size effect, which determines whether the fungus will take the budding yeast form or the mycelial form.

Farnesol concentrations required to block germ tube formation in Candida albicans in the presence and absence of serum
Article Abstract:
Concentrations of (E,E)-farnesol needed to inhibit germ tube formation were determined for Candida albicans strains A72 and SC5314 by using six different conditions known to trigger germination. It showed that Farnesol blocked germ tube formation but did not block elongation of existing germ tubes.

Quorum sensing in dimorphic fungi: Farnesol and beyond
Article Abstract:
Studies reveal that the production of farnesol by Candida albicans is the first quorum-sensing system discovered in a eukaryote. Accumulated farnesol affects both dimorphism and biofilm formation in Candida albicans and fungal dimorphism is defined as an environmentally controlled reversible interconversion of morphology, particularly yeast and mycelial morphologies.
