Forespore engulfment mediated by a ratchet-like mechanism
Article Abstract:
A second mechanism involving the zipper-like interaction between the forespore protein SpollQ and its mother ligand SpoIIIAH, which are essential for engulfment when SpoIID, SpoIIP and SpoIIM (DMP) activity is reduced or SpoIIB is absent is described. Results suggest the existence of two separate engulfment machineries that compensate for one another in intact cells, thereby rendering engulfment robust.

24p3 and its receptor: Dawn of a new iron age?
Article Abstract:
The cloning of the receptor for 24p3 called 24p3R is described and the DNA sequence of this molecule matched a database entry proposed to encode a murine braintype organic cation transporter. This molecule is highly conserved in humans and is predicted to have twelve transmembrane helices, suggesting a link between iron internalization mediated by 24p3R and the regulation of apoptosis.

Finding the fittest fold: Using the evolutionary record to design new proteins
Article Abstract:
Peptide libraries that were based on the different classes of WW domains for functional binding to the artificial WW sequences are reported. It is indicated that a disturbed cooperative network of residues is involved in substrate binding even on the opposite face of the binding pocket.
