Fueling synapses
Article Abstract:
The transmission of information across neuronal synapses is difficult hence, scientists monitored the localization of mitochondria to analyze different levels of synaptic activation. It was found that different organelles change their distribution in different ways, such as stalling near synapses when neurons were activated and increasing their movement when neurons were silent.

Connecting mitochondria and innate immunity
Article Abstract:
A new intracellular signaling protein that is required for activating type I interferon expression in response to viral infection is identified. Results reveal that the function of this protein, which they call mitochondrial antiviral signaling (MAVS), requires that it be localized to the mitochondria, thus providing a link between mitochondria and innate immune defense system.

Mitochondrial inner-membrane fusion and crista maintenance requires the dynamin-related GTPase Mgm1
Article Abstract:
Trans interactions of Mgm1 are required to tether, fuse inner membranes and to maintain cristae structures. Findings demonstrate that Mgm1 plays an important role distinct from Fzo1 and provides perspectives towards why mutations in the human orthologs of Mgm cause different neurodegenerative diseases.
