Fur regulates the expression of iron-stress genes in the cyanobacterium Synechococcus sp. strain PCC 7942
Article Abstract:
The ferric uptake regulation (fur) gene from the cyanobacterium Synechococcus sp. strain PCC 7942 may be involved in regulating expression of iron-stress genes. The elimination of wild-type copies of the fur gene from the polyploid genome is difficult. Insertional mutagenesis of the cloned cyanobacterial fur gene results in the formation of heteroallelic mutants with deficiency in iron. The fur gene encodes a protein that resembles Fur from Escherichia coli. The protein also has a putative iron-binding site similar to that of Fur proteins in purple bacteria.

UV-A-induced expression of GroEL in the UV-A-resistant marine cyanobacterium Oscillatoria sp. NKBG 091600
Article Abstract:
The response of the ultraviolet-A-resistant marine cyanobacterium Oscillatoria sp NKBG 091600 to ultraviolet-A irradiation has been investigated. It was found that the expression of a 60 kDa protein, called GroEL, was significantly induced at 500 min after ultraviolet-A irradiation. GroEL was identified by N-terminal amino acid sequence analysis and its synthesis was regulated by ultraviolet-A at the transcriptional level. It was also shown that an SOS response regulation is instrumental in ultraviolet-A-induced GroEL expression of NKBG 091600.

somA, a novel gene that encodes a major outer-membrane protein of Synechococcus sp. PCC 7942
Article Abstract:
The cloning and sequencing of somA, a novel gene that encodes major outer-membrane protein of the unicellular cyanobacterium Synechococcus sp. PCC 7942, is reported. Nucleotide sequence analysis predicted that somA consists of 531 amino acids. Its deduced amino acid sequence has similarities with two proteins, the cell-surface S-layer protein of Thermus thermophilus and the flagellin of Campylobacter coli, while its predicted amino acid sequence is observed to have a signal peptide-like sequence at its N terminus.
