Phenotypic and molecular analysis of mes-3, a maternal-effect gene required for proliferation and viability of the germ line in C. elegans
Article Abstract:
The role of mes-3, one of the postembryonic maternal effect sterile genes, in germ line development in the nematode Caenorhabditis elegans was determined. The progeny of mes-3 mutant mothers contained few germ cells and no gametes. These germ cells were observed to undergo a necrotic-like death instead of programmed cell death. Detailed phenotypic and molecular analysis of the germ cells in mes-3 animals showed that mes-3 is required for the normal development and proliferation of the germ line.

Structure, expression, chromosomal location and product of the gene encoding ADH2 in Petunia
Article Abstract:
The second Adh2 gene of Petunia was cloned and analyzed using polymerase chain reaction. Nucleotide sequence, genetic mapping and northern analyses showed that the gene encodes ADH2. In a related study, the structures and expressions of Adh1 and Adh2 genes of Petunia were compared with those of the Adh genes of maize. The results showed similar mode of regulation for the pair of genes in both Petunia and maize.
