Genetic diversity of Xanthomonas oryzae pv. oryzae in Asia
Article Abstract:
Examination of the genetic diversity of Xanthomonas oryzae pv. oryzae, collected from various rice-growing countries in Asia, by restriction fragment length polymorphism and virulence analyses reveals that the collection forms five types of clusters. Genetic distances between clusters ranged from 0.48 to 0.64 and distances within the five clusters range from 0.16 to 0.51. Majority of the strains from South Asia exhibit virulence toward cultivars with the bacterial blight resistance gene xa-5, while strains from other countries exhibit avirulence toward xa-5.

Assessment of genetic diversity and population structure of Xanthomonas oryzae pv. oryzae with a repetitive DNA element
Article Abstract:
A repetitive sequence in the Xanthomonas oryzae pv. oryzae genome was used to measure the genetic diversity of the population structure of X. oryzae pv. oryzae collected in the Philippines over a period of 15 years. There was a strong association between restriction fragment length polymorphism types and race groupings. The genetic diversity of the total population indicated a high level of variability in the pathogen population.

Novel candidate virulence factors in rice pathogen Xanthomonas oryzae pv. oryzicolas as revealed by mutational analysis
Article Abstract:
Bacterial leaf streak caused by Xanthomonas oryzae pv. oryzicola is shown to be an important disease of rice. Transposon-mediated mutational analysis of the pathogen has disclosed candidate virulence factors that have included genes involved in the pathogenesis of other phytopathogenic bacteria, virulence factors of animal pathogenesis and genes not associated with virulence.
