Genetic diversity through the looking glass: effect of enrichment bias
Article Abstract:
The impact of enrichment bias on the diversity of 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetate-degrading bacteria obtained from soil was assessed by comparing the diversity of isolates from direct plating to the diversity of isolates from 85 liquid batch cultures. About 42% of the direct-plating isolates hybridized with the tfdA and tfdB genes from Alcaligenes eutrophus JMP134(pJP4), 27% hybridized with the tfdA and tfdB genes from Burkholderia sp. strain RASC, and 30% hybridized with none of the probes. On the other hand, the enrichment isolates had fewer populations than the isolates from direct plating and also had a single hybridization pattern with 2,4-D catabolic gene probes.

Genetic diversity of an Italian Rhizobium meliloti population from different Medicago sativa varieties
Article Abstract:
Analysis of molecular variance shows significant DNA polymorphism in 96 phenotypically identical Rhizobium meliloti isolates from four Medicago sativa varieties from different geographical locations and soils in north Italy. The randomly amplified polymorphic DNA and restricted fragment length polymorphism methods show a similar level of genetic diversity. The genetic variation is spread over the entire chromosome and the symbiotic plasmid pSym. The genetic diversity depends on the geographical location, kind of soil and genotype of the host plant.

Genetic diversity and dynamics of Sinorhizobium meliloti populations nodulating different alfalfa cultivars in Italian soils
Article Abstract:
The rhizobium population of alfalfa can change substantially over periods of time, according to researchers who used random amplified polymorphic DNA techniques to study the genetic diversity of Sinorhizobium meliloti nodulating different alfalfa cultures. They found 440 different haplotypes among the isolates and differences among plants affected genetic diversity more than the soil and the cultivar.
