Glutamate decarboxylase genes as a prescreening marker for detection of pathogenic Escherichia coli groups
Article Abstract:
PCR primers that amplify the genes for glutamate decarboxylase could be used to detect all pathogenic strains of Escherichia coli in water. Researchers show that all strains of E. coli contain these genes, whereas only six Shigella species out of 22 non-E. coli isolates tested had the genes.

Improved laboratory enrichment for enterohemorrhagic Escherichia coli by exposure to extremely acidic conditions
Article Abstract:
Escherichia coli capable of producing toxins with a cytopathic effect on vero cells were originally designated verotoxin-producing E.coli (VTEC). A procedure was developed for enrichment of enterohemorrhagic escherichia coli by exposure to acidic conditions.
