Inheritance of a recessive character controlling reduced carotenoid pigmentation in carrot (Daucus carota L.)
Article Abstract:
The recessive reduced-pigment (rp) gene produces the low pigmentation of white and less pigmented carrots. An analysis of crosses between normal and reduced pigmented variety supports the monogenic character of this reduced pigment phenotype. In the rprp genotype, the carotenoid content is reduced by 92% as compared to the normal RPRP genotype, but a minimal amount of carotenoid synthesis is maintained. The first few leaves of the plant carrying the rp gene are white. This indicates that rp also affects the chlorophyll levels of the leaves.

A single recessive gene for resistance to the root-knot nematode (Meloidogyne javanica) in Cucumis sativus var. hardwickii
Article Abstract:
The resistance to the root-knot nematode, Meloidogyne javanica, is determined by a recessive gene, mj, in Cucumis sativus var. hardwickii. A cross between the resistant LJ 90430 and the susceptible Sumter produces the susceptible F(sub 1) offsprings, which give a segregation ratio of 1 resistant: 3 susceptible in the F(sub 2) generation. The resistance remains unaffected by cytoplasmic or maternal effects. Cross between LJ 90430 and five cucumber inbred lines indicates that the inheritance of resistance is unaffected by genetic background.

Resistance to root knot nematode (Meloidogyne hapla Chitwood) in carrot is controlled by two recessive genes
Article Abstract:
Two different homozygous recessive genes control the resistance to root-knot nematode in carrot. An analysis of the seedlings of three parental genotypes, and six F1 and three F2 populations for resistance reveals that the F1 plants are susceptible, indicating lack of dominance in these parental materials. The infestation of Meloidogyne hapla Chitwood in carrots is determined in a greenhouse experiment on the basis of the gall number, gall rating, and root rating.
