Isolation and purification of propionicin PLG-1, a bacteriocin produced by astrain of Propionibacterium thoenii
Article Abstract:
The production, isolation and purification of propionicin PLG-1 is discussed. The bacteriocin was prepared from a strain of Propionibacterium thoenii and was assayed by both the criticaldilution method and the well diffusion method. Purification involved ion-exchange chromatography and isoelectric focusing. It was found that the cloning of the genetic determinants of propionicin PLG-1 should be facilitated with the elucidation of the amino acid sequence of the bacteriocin.

An automated fluorescent PCR method for detection of Shiga toxin-producing Escherichia coli in foods
Article Abstract:
A study was conducted on an automated fluorescence-based polymerase chain reaction (PCR) system to determine whether it is effective for identifying Shiga toxin-producing Escherichia coli. The system, a model Ag-9600 AmpliSensor analyzer, was tested on 53 naturally contaminated meat and 48 raw milk samples. Results indicate that the automated PCR-based system can be used for detecting all serotypes of STEC in food and clinical samples.
