Low intraspecific diversity in a Polynucleobacter subcluster population numerically dominating bacterioplankton of a freshwater pond
Article Abstract:
The microdiversity of a Polynucleobacter subcluster bacterial population occurring in freshwater bacterioplankton with high numbers was investigated by combining cultivation-dependent and independent methods. It was concluded that a Polynucleobacter population with an extremely low intraspecific diversity and a numerically uneven structure dominated the bacterioplankton community which is in strong contrast to the high intraspecific diversities found in marine bacterial populations.

Ecological differentiation within a cosmopolitan group of planktonic freshwater bacteria (SOL cluster, Saprospiraceae, Bacteroidetes)
Article Abstract:
The members of monophelytic SOL clusters are large filamentous bacteria inhabiting the pelagic zone of many freshwater habitats. The abundances of SOL bacteria and compositions of SOL communities in samples from 115 freshwater ecosystems around the globe are determined by fluorescence in situ hybridization with cluster and subcluster-specific oligonucleotide probes.
