New method for estimating bacterial cell abundances in natural samples by use of sublimation
Article Abstract:
A new counting method based on the sublimation of adenine from Escherichia coli was developed to estimate total bacterial abundances in natural samples. Results of the study show the feasibility of using sublimation to estimate total bacterial counts in natural samples. Since sublimation-based cell enumeration accounts for all organic matter connected with dead and living cells, this method is more useful for determining total cell equivalents in samples that contain low levels of viable nucleoid-containing cells.

Metabolic engineering of a 1,2-propanediol pathway in Escherichia coli
Article Abstract:
The production of R-1,2-propanediol (PD) in Escherichia coli strains having the glycerol dehydrogenase genes have been investigated. The study seeks to discover new fermentation routes for 1,2-PD, an important chemical derived from propylene, from renewable sources. It will also be demonstrated that E. coli overexpressing the methylglyoxal synthase gene produces 1,2-PD. Results reveal that expressing glycerol dehydrogenase or methylglyoxal synthase in E. coli result in the production of 0.25 g of 1,2-PD per liter.

An efficient method of selectable marker gene excision by Xer recombination for gene replacement in bacterial chromosomes
Article Abstract:
A simple and effective method of unlabeled, stable gene insertion into bacterial chromosomes was developed. The strategy demonstrates that inclusion of exogenous site-specific recombinases or transposases in trans is unnecessary, since an effective recombination system is already present in bacteria with the high recombination frequency making the inclusion of a counter-selectable marker gene unnecessary.
