Microsatellite variation reveals low genetic subdivision in a chromosome race of Sorex araneus (Mammalia, Insectivora)
Article Abstract:
Research into patterns of gene flow and genetic structure of populations of Sorex araneus, the common shrew, has involved trapping 245 individuals in four distinct valleys in the Swiss and French Alps. Six microsatellite loci were used as genetic markers, with microsatellite polymorphism being analyzed using the polymerase chain reaction. There was high polymorphism at the six microsatellite loci. There was a small but significant heterozygote deficiency between localities, showing a slight geographic subdivision at the geographic level sampled. It seems that an isolation by distance model is adequate to account for the genetic structure in the common shrew.

GENECLASS2: A software for genetic assignment and first-generation migrant detection
Article Abstract:
GENECLASS2 is a software that computes various genetic assignment criteria to assign or exclude reference populations as the origin of diploid or haploid individuals, as well as of groups of individuals, on the basis of multilocus genotype data. It includes several Monte Carlo resampling algorithms that compute for each individual its probability of belonging to each reference population or to be a resident (that is not a first-generation migrant) in the population where it was sampled.

Analytical Bayesian approach for assigning individuals to populations
Article Abstract:
A general formulation of the Bayesian method is proposed for assigning individuals to a population among a predetermined set of reference populations. The ability of the Bayesian procedure to handle imprecise information is discussed.
