Microvascular development: Learning from pancreatic islets
Article Abstract:
Microvascular development is determined by the interplay between tissue cells and microvascular endothelial cells and the pancreatic islet is an organ composed mainly of endothelial and endocrine cells. The panercreatic islet is a tissue particularly studied for its critical involvement in diabetes mellitus, a disease that affects about 130 million people worldwide.

The source(s) for new pancreatic beta cells in adult life
Article Abstract:
The natural source for new pancreatic beta cells is an important issue both for understanding the pathogenesis of diabetes, and for possibly curing diabetes by increasing the number of beta cells. The data conclusively showed that beta-cell replication was the only source for new beta cells without contributions from stem cells or other non-beta cells.

Bile duct as a source of pancreatic beta cells
Article Abstract:
The conversion of liver to pancreas raises the intriguing possibility of generating insulin-producing beta cells for therapeutic transplantation into diabetics. Transdifferentiation is defined as the conversion of one differentiated cell type into another and transdetermination is the switch of a cell from one state of determination to another.
