Mutually exclusive splicing of the insect Dscam Pre-mRNA directed by competing intronic RNA secondary structures
Article Abstract:
Drosophila Dscam encodes 38,016 distinct axon guidance receptors through the mutually exclusive alternative splicing of 95 variable exons. The mutually exclusive nature of the docking site, selector sequence interactions suggests the formation of the competing RNA structures is a central component of the mechanism guaranteeing that only one exon 6 variant is included in each Dscam mRNA.

Alternative splicing of Drosophila Dscam generates axon guidance receptors that exhibit isoform-specific homophilic binding
Article Abstract:
The different binding specificities shown by different isoforms through alternate splicing of Drosophila Dscam is demonstrated. It is proposed that this preferential homophillic binding specificity regulates activity between cells and is responsible for complex pattern structures of neuronal connections.

Descrambling Dscam diversity
Article Abstract:
A study to show that isoform diversity of the Dscam protein in Drosophila is required to establish stereotypical axonal branching patterns is presented. The study suggests that nonrandom expression of Dscam alternative splice variants determines neural connectivity.
