Natural transformation in mesophilic and thermophilic bacteria:identification and characterization of novel, closely related competence genes in Acinetobacter sp. strain BD413 and Thermus thermophilus HB27
Article Abstract:
Researchers describe genes in Acinetobacter sp. strain BD413 and Thermus thermophilus HB27 that produce proteins similar to the ComA, ComEC, and ComEA genes in Neisseria and Bacillus. These proteins appear to be involved in the natural transformation process.

Pilin-like proteins in the extremely thermophilic bacterium Thermus thermophilus HB27: implication in competence for natural transformation and links to type IV pilus biogenesis
Article Abstract:
Research reveals that twelve genes in three loci encode prepilin-like protein in Thermus thermophilus HB27. Results show that one of the loci contains four genes that encode prepilin-like proteins and are involved in natural transformation. Data indicate that the T. thermophilus pilus structures are type IV pili and are implicated in natural transformation of T. thermophilus HB27.

A novel competence gene, comP, is essential for natural transformation of Acinetobacter sp. strain BD413
Article Abstract:
The generation of ADP239 mutants of Acinetobacter sp. is described. These mutants are unable to undergo natural transformation due to the absence of a competence gene designated as comP. Further analysis indicates that this gene functions in DNA binding or uptake. Despite similarities to the amino acids found in a pilus subunit, the gene is not essential to the generation of pili. It is postulated that comP gene product is an element of an oligomeric structure responsible for DNA translocation.
