Nesting failure of the Wood Stork in a neotropical wetland
Article Abstract:
Astudy was conducted to determine the effect of climactic changes on nesting failure among the Wood Stork (Mycteria americana). Breeding behavior of Wood Storks was observed at the Sian Ka'an Biosphere Reserve, Mexico, in 1986. The observations showed that early rains at Sian Ka'an coincided with the end of the Wood Stork reproductive season and adversely affected nesting success in the colony. Water sensitive Wood Storks bred successfully in dry seasons when water level was low and prey availability was high but during heavy rains, the nestlings either died or were deserted by adult Wood Storks.

Digestibility of three fish species by Double-crested Cormorants
Article Abstract:
The metabolizable energy coefficients (MECs) of three commonly consumed fish species were studied using Double-crested Comorants. Four birds were tested with one to three species of dye-marked fish, namely: channel catfish, gizzard shad and bluegill. A spectrophotometer was then used to analyzed the birds' feces and determine the marker concentration. The estimated MECs of the fish diets used in the tests were found to range from 77.9% to 89.2%.
